Importance of Building Code Certification

Building Code has changed in most of the continental United States

The building code serves as the basic roadmap that an engineer uses to design a structure. A new building code that is now in effect addresses anchor design. In prior years, many structural engineers relied on manufacturer testing programs and a design method that incorporated safety margins, provided by a standard factor of 4:1 or 10:1 (Allowable Stress Design).

In 2003 and 2006, the International Building Code (IBC) introduced new requirements for the design, testing and evaluation of anchors, which are now in place in nearly all United States jurisdictions.

Strength Design (SD) is replacing Allowable Stress Design (ASD). All anchoring products will be required to comply with the IBC through new product specific testing and evaluation.

What is strength design?

Strength Design (SD) is a design procedure used by engineers to ensure acceptable levels of safety and the proper functioning of a structure for its projected lifetime. SD is based on statistics, engineering principles and a general knowledge of material behavior. When applied to anchoring, SD requires the factored resistance to be greater than the factored loading.

How does strength design apply to anchorage in concrete?

The 2003 International Building Code requires post installed anchors to be designed according to ACI 318 Appendix D, which is based on Strength Design, and ACI 355.2, which requires the anchors to be tested and qualified for performance in cracked concrete conditions.
