The Story of Tanner
Jerry Tannenbaum and the Origins of Tanner
Tanner’s history dates to the 1950s. With the end of WWII, a surplus of army material created opportunities for businesses to grow and prosper, and in New York City a budding fastener industry was born.
Shortly after serving in the Korean war, Jerry Tannenbaum began working in the fastener business with a company called Brooklyn Bolt & Nut. He began working as a truck driver before working his way up to move into a sales role and eventually became one of the top people at the company.
At Brooklyn Bolt & Nut, Jerry was a part of various iconic New York City projects, including the Verrazano Bridge.
Eventually, Brooklyn Bolt & Nut ceased operations. This presented Jerry with an opportunity to start his own business.
Jerry Tannenbaum started Tanner Hardware at 1025 Atlantic Avenue
Tanner Hardware
Once Brooklyn Bolt & Nut closed, Jerry started his own company in 1965, Tanner Hardware. The first shop was opened down on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Here, the foundation of values that Tanner uses to this day was formed: breadth and depth of inventory with an emphasis on specialty and hard-to-find products, quick turnaround times, a one-on-one personalized experience supported by a knowledgeable "problem solving" customer service staff, and brand name quality products at competitive prices.
These values allowed Jerry and Tanner Hardware to succeed within one of the most competitive markets in the entire country.
Tanner Bolt & Nut
Looking for a new start after the turbulent events in New York City during the 1970s, in 1979 Jerry founded the Tanner we know today under the name "Tanner Bolt & Nut".
Literally starting from scratch in his basement and garage at his home in Canarsie, Brooklyn with the help of family, Tanner Bolt & Nut quickly expanded to become a key player in a variety of industries across the country including manufacturers, contractors in multiple trades, and government agencies.
In 1988, after Jerry passed away, Jeff Tannenbaum officially became the president of Tanner Bolt & Nut.
Tanner Today
Eventually, Tanner Bolt & Nut became known as simply “Tanner”. With offices, a warehouse, and retail store located in East New York, Brooklyn, expansion in the NYC metropolitan area, consisted of additional retail locations in Sunset Park, Brooklyn; Maspeth, Queens; and Farmingdale, Long Island. The Tanner of today embodies all the same values that helped us find success from the beginning, while also adapting to the changing needs of our customers.
Over the last few years, Tanner has contributed products and services to the following projects:

Tanner was born in NYC, but through a dogged persistence to take care of our customers that's built into our DNA, we've grown and expanded to become a go-to distributor nationwide.
In 2022, we proudly relaunched our Tanner Bolt & Nut website, www.tannerbolt.com, with a fresh, modern design built using the latest technology. The upgrade focused on creating a smoother, more intuitive browsing experience for our customers. Navigation became simpler and more efficient, making it easier to find products, resources, and support.
We also enhanced the site’s functionality, ensuring it was faster, more responsive, and mobile-friendly. Our goal was to make every interaction—from product search to checkout—seamless, user-friendly, and tailored to the needs of our customers. This update reinforced our commitment to providing not just quality products, but also an exceptional online experience.
With a history dating back to the 1950's, we're still proud of our Brooklyn roots and look forward to bringing our brand of business to consumers nationwide.
